www.wheretheyatnola.comWe’ve suffered near financial ruin and near arrest in Juvenile’s studio to  present to you an evolving, online archive of 20 years of New Orleans Bounce and Hip Hop in Words & Pictures (and video, and ephemera, and lps…).

For over 18 months, my project partner Alison Fensterstock and I, have dedicated our waking hours to creating the only archive of its kind; tracking down folks from a master list of nearly 80 artists/djs/label owners who played an architectural role in creating a very unique and specific sound of hip hop that was born in New Orleans. Please enjoy the site; it’s there for you to explore, to learn, and to listen to the narrative that defines a genre in the words of the people who created it. Feedback in our community forum is encouraged. This project is ongoing. There are many folks we have yet to find, and many amazing cassettes we have yet to upload to the archives. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

The show is presently on display at the Smithsonian-affiliated Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans until August 1st. If you’re interested in a 32 page color exhibition catalog, do contact.
Opening night covered here:

Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival is this weekend

    • History of the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival

The world famous Crawfish Festival began in 1960 as a spin-off of the Breaux Bridge Centennial Celebration. The Louisiana Legislature had just named Breaux Bridge the Crawfish Capital of the World in 1959. The festival is now known around the country and even the world. Every May, thousands of hungry people flock to Breaux Bridge to be part of the festivities.

The Crawfish Festival has also become one of the largest gatherings of world famous Cajunmusicians. All weekend long you can hear the sound of authentic Cajun, Zydeco and Swamp Pop music rising from the festival. Whether your musical taste is Cajun or Creole, you can witness over 30 bands perform over the three day event if you think you have the stamina. It’s a perfect opportunity to see our musical tradition passed from generation to generation. Watch the Cajun dance contests, and if you’re brave, join in. There’s no better way to learn. There are even Cajun music workshops held in the heritage tent.

FW: Crawfish on Sabine river

These pictures were taken on Hwy 12 between Starks and Deweyville on the sides of the road. The water was high and after the dam gates at Toledo were closed the water started going down and this is what it looks like. People are on the sides of the highway using a dip net loading up everything they can get their hands on.   (Texas/Louisiana border)

BradyFontenot.com:

So hyped this is finally done. Stopped by Ness’ today to pickup the full load of finished posters and unexpectedly he had some sample envelopes ready as well.  Feels really nice to see this completed.  Ness and Lizzy both worked really hard on this.  I’ll be putting them around town in New Orleans at coffee shops and  elsewhere so go out and find one if you like it.  My friendly clients, just sit tight and wait for it to show up in your mailbox.
